Sign here to declare illegality

Monday, May 22, 2006

Some poor guy (aka the official in charge of removals at the Home Office) has been getting a hard time in the right wing press for admitting he didn't know how many illegal immigrants there were in the UK. Now, I'm obviously missing something here: are illegal immigrants expected to register somewhere when they arrive in the UK? No? Then how the hell do you count them? Surely, if the guy had said, "We know exactly how many illegal immigrants there are," he would be expected to list their names and addresses.

And what does this emphasis on illegality mean in real terms? It forces people into hiding and criminality and into the arms of those who would blackmail and exploit them.
