Office move

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

You probably won't notice the difference but this post comes to you from my new office. Same desk, same building but I'm now upstairs in the 'posh' living room. This also doubles as the library because it has built-in shelves for my books but the room doesn't get used much.

When the house was built towards the end of the 19th century this would have been the master bedroom. Now it's my new office. The reason for the move is simple: Laura is spending more time working from home and the study is really just too small for the two of us. I'd already lost my large desk to her so the move upstairs is no great sacrifice. I like being surrounded by my books, too.

The room's colder than the study, partly because it's larger and partly because it has a bigger area of window through which any residual warmth flees like a vampire at the hint of dawn. Noisier, too, because it overlooks the main road but the sound of traffic doesn't really bother me.

Moving up here also creates an immediate exercise regime for me as I have to descend and climb the stairs whenever I want a snack or to retrieve a print out from the printer, which reamins in the study.

Delivering the first draft of the VDSL article tomorrow. Just call me Mr. Twisted Pair.
