Who needs to pick it?
Thursday, May 19, 2005
There's a veritable flurry of postings around at the moment regarding the apparent ease with which a Kensington laptop lock can be picked. See here, for instance. And here for a movie of the lock being picked.
All I can say is that I gave up on my Kensington lock a long time ago. I always found the little twisty prong thing (a technical term, which a lot of you non-geek readers won't fully understand)at the end both irritating and suspiciously unconvincing. It had the look of a terminal underachiever. (Hey! I should know.) Anyway, it all came to a sad end between me and Kenny (as it became known) when he went and ripped a gaping hole out of the side of my Dell. Now I can't put any lock in there at all. It was probably my fault, of course. Fiddling, impatient, trying to get the key to work. Then again it could have been the build quality of the Latitude's reinforced plastic (?) around the slot. Who knows?
And it would appear that Kensington don't care very much. As Steve Rubel notes, they don't even have a corporate blog with which to respond to the growing blognoise.
The moral of the tale (both tales, really) is: carry your laptop with you. That's why they're called 'portables'.
